What To Look For In A Grow Light System
Can You Adjust The Height?
It is essential that you’re able to easily raise the height of the grow light as the plants grow. If you’re unable to do this then you risk scorching the plant to death or worse, setting it on fire if the leaf touches the light. This is very rare and modern grow light systems simply do not get hot enough for flames to occur.
When starting out with young seedlings, you need to keep the grow light between 2 and 4 inches from the surface. As they start to shoot and sprout, raise the light accordingly. The Hydrofarm T5 Grow Lights enable you to raise each side independently in case one side grows faster than the other. This enables you to plant different types of vegetables at either side of the light.
Is It Energy Efficient?
Since you’ll be leaving your grow light on for the majority of the time, it really does make sense to get an energy efficient system, lest your electricity bill go sky high! Many systems, especially the larger and older ones simply eat through your electricity. Thankfully the Hydrofarm Jump Start T5 Grow Light System uses 40 watts.
Well no not really! As long as it’s in your budget and the thing works, it’s really not that complicated. Well there’s a few things i’ll mention just in case:
Depending on what you’re growing you can either keep them under the grow light permanently or else remove them to another location either inside or out. If you do plan on moving your plants to a more permenant location and you’re changing the growing medium they’re kept in then you should always use some plant vitamins so they survive the trauma intact. I always use Superthrive Plant Vitamin Hormone Supplement, it works fine for generally growing healthy plants in less time.
If you want to get your seeds off to a fast start (they don’t actually require the light until they shoot) then you could use the Hydrofarm Seedling Heat Mat! You can even use it in combination with your light to get incredibly fast results after they sprout!
